Cultures of Ezora: the Chardaukans

This entry delves into a corner of Ezora, a fragment of my world’s lore that you can adapt to your game if you find it inspiring. Use this adaptable lore to enrich the story, characters, or themes of your own game world.   The Chardaukans are a human race native to the island of Chardauka, whose history emerges from resistance against oppression. Their origins can be traced back to the uprising of various primitive slave tribes who managed to break free from the mind control magic of their masters: the lizardmen, the batrachians, and other amphibian species. These creatures were creations of the ancient koprus, a tyrannical race from the marine depths that, since -25,000 CA, had consolidated vast underwater empires. The koprus transformed and subjugated various terrestrial species through their innate mind control magic, consolidating their power by constructing menhirs and monoliths imbued with arcane energy. These structures, raised by the amphibians, extended their influence ...

Adapting Red Hand of Doom to Ezora (1): Designing the Gnoll Horde

Red Hand of Doom was one of Wizards of the Coast’s most highly praised modules during the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Matt Colville brought it back into the spotlight a few years ago by mentioning on his channel that it was one of his favorite modules. Running it had always been on my bucket list, and its military theme (stopping the advance of a hobgoblin horde through the fertile Elsir Vale) felt vastly different from what I had been running lately. So, I began working on how to adapt it to Ezora, my homebrew setting. My first idea was to combine Red Hand of Doom with Rime of the Frostmaiden and The Legacy of the Crystal Shard , sprinkling in imagery from the Hakkonites in Jaws of Hakkon , a DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, I had already run several campaigns with a Nordic setting, so I decided to abandon that idea and shift to a different biome. The ultimate inspiration came from a hauntingly evocative illustration by Felipe Cavalcati , which led me to design...

Gods of Ezora: Thal'kor

This entry delves into a corner of Ezora, a fragment of my world’s lore that you can adapt to your game if you find it inspiring. Use this adaptable lore to enrich the story, characters, or themes of your own game world. Thal’kor, the demon-god of fire in the pantheon of the Blazing Pact , embodies corrupting magic and the darkest desires born of flames. A tall and slender figure reminiscent of a sul’tar, with obsidian skin cracked by glowing lines of molten magma, he radiates the cruel beauty of infernal power. His eyes, two incandescent orange orbs that never blink, reflect the insatiable hunger of fire, while his skeletal claws and crown of demonic horns remind all mortals of his divine nature. His membranous wings, vast as those of an abyssal bat, symbolize his reign over Ignia . Ignia is the infernal plane of flames and demons, a blazing dimension where fire elementals and demons burn with hatred and yearn to breach the Material Plane to consume all. Through the Sacred Volcanoe...

Chardaukan Hexcrawl: Adapting Fever Swamp

In this series of articles, I will guide you through the process of designing a sandbox hexcrawl, illustrating each step with Chardauka, one of the continents of my world. Throughout these articles, I will cover both adventure content creation to populate the hexes and the worldbuilding elements that bring the setting to lif e. Portada de Fever Swamp, por Andrew Walter «The air is moist. The moisture mixes with your sweat—the heat is relentless. The drone of insects gives you headaches, and the fever from the infected wounds has left you delirious. Your raft is damaged, and there are spirits in the trees. You’ve only been here for three days.» Fever Swamp is an adventure written by Luke Gearing for Lamentations of the Flame Princess and published in 2017. Gearing is also the author of the renowned Wolves upon the Coast . The module in question, which you can purchase here , is a small sandbox hexcrawl set in a swamp. Its content is evocative and original, with descriptions that i...

Cultures of Ezora: The Blazing Pact

This entry delves into a corner of Ezora, a fragment of my world’s lore that you can adapt to your game if you find it inspiring. Use this adaptable lore to enrich the story, characters, or themes of your own game world. A sul'tar The Blazing Pact is one of the most unique civilizations in Chardauka, notable for its adaptation to a hostile environment and a rich culture forged in the volcanic depths of the island. It is a multiracial alliance bound by a shared fiery lineage, a common religion, and a shared culture that has evolved over centuries. However, it should not be considered a monolithic entity: members of these races often live and integrate into other cultures, while individuals of other races sometimes embrace the religion and traditions of the Pact, even becoming full members. This diverse society, primarily composed of the sul’tar (fire elves), say’tar (fire orcs), tievas (tieflings), and other fiery-lineaged minorities such as firenewts and fire genasi, traces its ...

Chardaukan Hexcrawl: Designing the Base of Operations, Garampur (1)

In this series of articles, I will guide you through the process of designing a sandbox hexcrawl, illustrating each step with Chardauka, one of the continents of my world. Throughout these articles, I will cover both adventure content creation to populate the hexes and the worldbuilding elements that bring the setting to life. Let's design Garampur, the central city of the hexcrawl and base of operations for the PCs in our Chardaukan hexcrawl ! «I will now speak of the city of Zenobia and its remarkable features: though located in dry terrain, it rises on tall pilings, and its houses are made of bamboo and zinc, with many galleries and balconies set at different heights, supported by stilts layered one above the other, connected by rope ladders and suspended walkways. These culminate in lookouts crowned by conical roofs, water cisterns, weathervanes, and outfitted with pulleys, fishing lines, and cranes. [...] What is certain, however, is that when someone who lives in Zenobia...

Chardaukan Hexcrawl: Adapting The Challenge of the Frog Idol (2)

In this series of articles, I will guide you through the process of designing a sandbox hexcrawl, illustrating each step with Chardauka, one of the continents of my world. Throughout these articles, I will cover both adventure content creation to populate the hexes and the worldbuilding elements that bring the setting to lif e. This is the second installment of my adaptation of The Challenge of the Frog Idol module by Dyson Logos, reworked to fit into my hexcrawl, Chardauka. In the first part , I discussed how this module can enrich the worldbuilding of my setting. Now, let’s dive into how it can be integrated into key hexcrawl elements: locations to populate hexes, encounters for random encounter tables, and rumors for the rumor table. The Troglodyte Village and the Frog God Idol In my setting, the troglodytes, unlike other lizardfolk, continue to worship the Scaled Gods. However, they are typically an underground people, and I already have plans for them to feature prominently i...

The Alchemist’s Manor: A System-Agnostic Encounter with a Deadly Tendriculos

In this article, you’ll find a random encounter idea and an adventure location designed for easy integration into your game. This entry is system-agnostic, so you’ll need to adapt the stats and loot according to the system you’re using at your table. At the base of the mountain, along a forgotten goat trail, stands the ruin of an abandoned manor. Its weathered wooden facade is barely holding together, while one of the walls is entirely covered by a dense, thorny network of brambles. These plants, adorned with delicate white blossoms that were once the pride of their creator, are part of a lurking tendriculos : a semi-sentient plant creature that feeds on flesh and zealously guards the interior of the building. The tendriculos was cultivated by the solitary alchemist who once lived there, dedicating his life to the study of magical botany. In his relentless pursuit to perfect his experiments, he created the tendriculos. However, the plant grew beyond his control, becoming predat...
