Gods of Ezora: Sulayra

This entry delves into a corner of Ezora, a fragment of my world’s lore that you can adapt to your game if you find it inspiring. Use this adaptable lore to enrich the story, characters, or themes of your own game world.

As the goddess of geysers and underground springs, Sulayra reigns over hot springs, steam, and sulfurous rivers. Her domain also encompasses the steam-powered machines and constructs that bridge the natural world with the technological progress of her followers. Her influence is vital to the Blazing Pact, which relies on sulfurous and geothermal waters for trade and daily life. Her power manifests through the volcanic underground waters that flow beneath the mountains and the warm air that escapes through the earth's fissures. She is seen as a protective and pragmatic figure, watching over merchants who brave the perilous sulfur rivers. Though rarely seen, Sulayra is described as a slender, vaporous figure with flowing hair resembling streams of hot water and eyes that glow with volcanic fire.

Born from the union of Vulkar and Agni Hotra, Sulayra inherited her father’s gift of controlling underground waters and volcanic springs. However, it was under the guidance of Pyralion, the Methodical Smith, that she learned to channel this gift into the creation of steam constructs and machinery. As Pyralion’s apprentice, she mastered the art of crafting the first systems of pipes and valves that are now central to her temples and developed the principles of steam engineering that her followers use in trade and industry. After Pyralion’s departure to Arkadia, Sulayra became the primary guardian of engineering knowledge within the Blazing Pact.

Sulayra’s followers believe in the transformative power of trade and cultural exchange as forces that unite people. They regard sulfurous rivers and hot springs as sacred manifestations of their goddess, seeing them not only as natural resources but also as conduits of prosperity and knowledge. Steam is considered Sulayra’s breath, seen by her devotees as both purifying and energizing.

Sulayra’s adherents often have a fluid and adaptable outlook, making calculated decisions while being ready to seize opportunities, much like steam finds its way through any fissure. Her most devoted followers include merchants, navigators, and those who work with steam machinery. Temples dedicated to Sulayra are typically located near geothermal springs or along the banks of sulfurous rivers. Constructed of black volcanic stone, they are adorned with intricate patterns intertwining water and fire. Within these temples, acolytes maintain vast cauldrons of boiling sulfurous water, producing a perpetual mist that symbolizes Sulayra’s presence.

The Path of the Devout:

  1. Pray to Sulayra near hot water and steam.
  2. Protect and maintain river and sea trade routes, guarding them against pirates and monsters.
  3. Aid travelers and merchants in distress.
  4. Never break a fair deal or commercial agreement.
  5. Honor Sulayra’s connection to steam machinery by helping with its upkeep and promoting its use.

Hexcrawl25 Challenge by Maatlock

The Hexcrawl25 Challenge is a proposal inspired by the famous Dungeon23 Challenge , but tailored for those who want to undertake a hexcrawl development project for the new year rather than creating a dungeon. Designed by Maatlock, this challenge invites participants to create a complete campaign world over the course of a year, focusing on designing hexagonal maps and filling them with evocative, playable content. The primary goal is to develop a map consisting of 19 regional hexes arranged in a "flower" pattern, with a central hex surrounded by two rings. Each of these regional hexes is further divided into 19 smaller sub-hexes, creating a total of 319 sub-hexes.
